Social media can provide connection, entertainment, education, and community. The concern is how it affects mood, sleep, identity, relationships, and daily functioning.

A teen compares an ordinary day, imperfect appearance, or uncertain future with someone else’s edited highlight reel. Likes, views, comments, and follower counts create visible measures of approval. This may contribute to anxiety, constant checking, appearance concerns, fear of exclusion, sleep disruption, difficulty concentrating, conflict at home, and reduced confidence.

Parents should look beyond screen time and ask how a platform affects mood, whether it interferes with sleep, whether bullying or exclusion is occurring, and whether maintaining an online identity feels exhausting. Therapy may help young people examine how online experiences affect emotions, identity, relationships, and self-esteem.
