Support for Individuals and Families Affected by Substance Use

Substance use can affect emotions, relationships, judgment, finances, school, work, and the overall stability of a family.

The problem may be obvious, or it may exist behind secrecy, denial, missed responsibilities, unexplained changes, and repeated conflict.

Common concerns include increasing substance use, difficulty stopping, repeated relapse, secrecy, behavior changes, loss of motivation, school or work problems, relationship conflict, financial consequences, risky behavior, family enabling, co-occurring anxiety or depression, difficulty maintaining recovery, and family members unsure how to help.

Understanding More Than the Substance

Substance use often serves a purpose before it becomes destructive. It may temporarily reduce anxiety, numb emotional pain, provide escape, or create a sense of belonging.

Therapy examines both the consequences of substance use and the emotional, relational, and behavioral patterns connected to it.

The work may include motivation, coping strategies, relapse patterns, emotional regulation, boundaries, family dynamics, and support for recovery

Support for the Family

Families may become trapped between rescuing, confronting, avoiding, and trying to control the person using substances.

Therapy can help family members understand enabling patterns, establish healthier boundaries, communicate more effectively, reduce reactive conflict, protect their own well-being, make realistic decisions, and respond more consistently.
