Communication problems are not always caused by a lack of skills. A person may know what they want to say but become too angry, anxious, defensive, or overwhelmed to say it effectively.
Dysregulation may look like yelling, shutting down, leaving abruptly, saying hurtful things, repeating the same point, becoming unable to listen, or using alcohol or substances to cope. Couples and families can trigger one another in automatic sequences.
Emotional regulation means recognizing what is happening internally and choosing a response that does not make the situation more destructive. Therapy helps make the sequence visible so people have a better chance of interrupting it.
